Zomato – The controversy for Cheap publicity
Zomato
Amit Shukla a customer of #Zomato ordered food and later asked for order-cancellation as the food is delivered by a Muslim guy. It is his personal freedom that is guaranteed by the Constitution and allow him to take his order from the person or not. Food is an intensely personal choice, be it on religious, ethical or health grounds. In that sense, food is an expression of oneself, be it regional or national cuisine, of ingredients, of techniques or indeed of dietary choices.
Food— having a tragic power to initiate emotions of pleasure, love, care, happy, sorrow and even anger in us. It brings joy to festivals and parties and also brings sadness by filling us with memories of those who have left us. When the intake of food is done right, it brings a sense of satisfaction not just to the stomach but to the soul also. Safety and the aroma near the food bring a hormonal secretion which actually gives the fruity taste of it. One would have never thought that this basic requirement for human survival would fall prey to the politics of hatred. But when nothing remains untouched by politics and controversy, how could food?
This legitimate mostly because religious cuisines have strict laws on how to prepare food and who touched it. It is about piety, where food is seen as an offering to the gods or great souls. Can such an offering be made by people who are not pious – for example, how will the “sacrifice” be a “sacrifice” if it’s done by an Atheist?

- A customer Amit Shukla asked #Zomato to change the delivery executive for his order as he was ‘non-Hindu’ and his belief not allow him to accept the food from non-Hindu due to the month of Holy Sawan. The basic idea behind this is that this month is the most favorite of Mahadev. So, Hindu obliges it and make it away from impure things.
- #Zomato refused to oblige and called him out for his biased narrow mind-set. The company had to defend its decision with a tweet that read, “Food doesn’t have a religion. It is a religion.” Customers are GOD for you in this kind of Capitalist economy. You should respect your God.
“Religion or God is for you Mr. Goyal and #Zomato, #Sanathan is the only Religion for us”. We do not need lectures on Religion especially from a Food aggregating app.
Zomato tells that what’s wrong in fearing food delivered by a Muslim in times when Muslims jingoistically follow jihad to the extent of poisoning Hindu food, and if the food does not have a religion why do they care to replace Halal meat with a non-Halal one.
How the company is fine if some customers want specifically “Halal” meat. The users claimed that by having the ‘Halal’ option, #Zomato is associating religion to food. The controversy over a customer canceling an order on #Zomato because of the delivery person’s religion has sparked a debate about the ‘halal’ and ‘jhatka’ methods of slaughter online.
- The Madhya Pradesh police have taken suo-moto cognizance of Amit Shukla’s tweets and may possibly file a case against him under Section 107 of CrPC.
Section 107 CrPC :“Security for keeping the peace”, and says: “When an Executive Magistrate receives information that any person is likely to commit a breach of the peace or disturb the public tranquility or to do any wrongful act that may probably occasion a breach of the peace or disturb the public tranquility and is of opinion that there is sufficient ground for proceeding for keeping the peace for such period, not exceeding one year, as the Magistrate thinks fit.”
We should oppose this. Unless one actively incites violence, bigots have a right to their bigotry. However, if one chooses to proceed against Amit Shukla, it is equally necessary for the police to file cases under IPC Sections 153A & 295A against both Zomato and Deepinder Goyal as they deliberately chose to inflame a situation, amplifying hatred to their followers, with a deliberate intent for publicity.
#Zomato decided to blow it up for free publicity?
Zomato comes off as two-faced opportunists. They remain quiet on government money funding Muslim waqfs, who stick to their dietary practices but want ISKCON-NGOs to change its dietary practices for mid-day meals because it receives government money. They also want Air India, a government entity, to reverse its vegetarian-on-domestic flight’s policy, despite knowing fully well that vegetarian food will have the least overhead cost.
The personal beliefs, economics, policy, and legal precedent should all facilitate the liberals’ whims and fancies. That said, let us be clear they are right that Amit Shukla is a badly educated. But by that same standard, Deepinder Goyal, allegedly an IIT graduate is something far, far, worse; a vulture, who is the peacetime version of a war profiteer who knowingly and deliberately makes money off conflict.
