The history of Chittorgarh is one of the most thrilling segment in Indian medieval and the modern history. The stream of Rajput gallantry energies to life and the monster stretch of walls and maintained ruined narrates the saga of many attacks and worshiped bravery.

Chittor is one of the most historically forts in the world and it filled with tales patriotism and sacrifice. It is home to the legends. The land is famous for LOVE & WORSHIP of Meera, known for the SACRIFICE of Panna Dai. This land has history of JAUHAR

The atmosphere of Chittorgarh is charged with valour. Silent screams echo everywhere. The aura of romance is mired with bloody wars and agonizing sacrifices.

Chittorgarh Fort

It is one of the largest forts in India. The fort is a World Heritage Site. The Chittor Fort located on a 180-meter hilltop. It was constructed by the Mauryans in 7th century AD. In mythological story, there is a belief that it was constructed by Bhima of Pandavas. This fort was the birth & work place of many great warriors Gora, Badal, Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap.

Vijay Stambh
It is also known as the Victory Tower. Vijay Stambha, is a huge 9 floor tower which was built by Maharana Kumbha to celebrate his victory over the rulers of Malwa of Gujarat in 1440. This Stambh is 120 ft  high and stands on a high base. There are sculptures and carvings on the exterior and interior walls of the tower. The tower is visible from any section of the town below.

Kirti Stambh 

Kirti Stambh is a 72 ft tower built in 12th-century. It is dedicated to Rishabha, the first Tirthankara of Jainism. It is a seven storied pillar which was built by Biherwal Mahajan Sanaya of Digambar Jain sect during 12th century AD. On its four corners are engraved idols of Shri Adinathji in Digambar style which each are five feet high and elsewhere are engraved several small idols consecrated to Jain lineage of deities.

Rana Kumbha’s Palace
Rana Kumbha’s Palace is near the Vijay Stambh. This is the birthplace of Maharana Udai Singh, the founder of Udaipur. His life was saved by the maid Panna Dhay, who replaced her son in place of the prince, with the result that her son was killed. She carried the prince away from the danger to a safety in a basket.

Meera Bai also lived in this palace. This is the place where Rani Padmini committed jauhar with the other ladies in one of the underground halls.

Rani Padmini’s Palace is from which the Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khalji was allowed to watch a reflection of the Rani by replacing the mirror at such an angle that even if he turned back he could not see the room. Khalji had been warned that if he turned back they would cut his neck.

Jauhar Mela
The fort and the city of Chittorgarh host the biggest Rajput festival called the “Jauhar Mela”. It is generally believed that it commemorates Padmini’s jauhar, which is most famous. This festival is held primarily to commemorate the bravery of Rajput ancestors.

Water Fort
Chittorgarh fort is also called as Water Fort. The fort had 84 water bodies, out of which only 22 exist today. These Include talabs, kunds. All the ponds have a natural boarder of rocks.

Gaumukh Reservoir
It is a deep tank filled by a spring coming from a ‘cow mouth’, situated at the edge of the cliff. It is located near temple, and feeding fishes here is considered to be an auspicious ritual. The Gaumukh Reservoir is one of the eighty four water bodies of the fort is filled with water. 

Meera Temple
It was build by Maharana Kumbha in 1449. The splendid work of art on the temple attracts a large number of tourists and also the temple draws the Indo-Aryan style of architecture.

Kalika Mata Temple
This temple belongs to the 14th century and it is said that the temple which is placed across Padmini Palace was originally a temple which is also called “Temple of the Sun God”. After the attack by Allaudin Khilji, this temple was destroyed. Dedicated to Goddess Kali also known ak Kalika Mata.

Fateh Prakash Palace
It was build by Maharana Fateh Singh in a morden style. This place has been named Fateh Prakesh after Maharana Fateh Singh. A big Ganesh idol, a fountain, and different frescoes attract the visitor’s attentions. It is now a museum, has a rich collection of sculptures from temples and other buildings of the Fort.

Seven Gates of the Fort
To enter in to the Fort Of Chittorgarh, the person has to go through seven huge gates. Each gate is different in its name, built as massive stone structures with secure fortifications for military defense. These gates are known as Pole. Below is the list of these gates:

  3. Hanuman Pol
  4. Jorla Pol
  5. Ganesh Pol
  6. Laxman Pol
  7. Ram Pol

The Legends of Chittorgarh:


In 1303 Allauddin khilji, distracted by tales of the beauty of Padmini, Rani of Chittor, of her wit and charm. So, for getting her Beauty-Glimpse, his armies surrounded Chittor, and the sultan sent a warned message to Rana Rattan Singh, to say that he would ruin the city if he could meet its queen. The final compromise was that the sultan could look upon Padmini’s reflection if he came unarmed into the fort.

Accordingly, the sultan went up the hill and glimpsed a reflection of the beautiful Padmini standing by a lotus pool. While during escort the outer gate-where Rana hostaged.

Later, messenger informed the sultan that the rani would come to him. Dozens of curtained palanquins set off down the hill, each carried by six humble bearers.In the ensuing battle, Rana Rattan Singh was rescued.

The sultan now attacked Chittor with renewed vigor. The rani and her entire entourage of women, the wives of generals and soldiers dressed their wedding fine and performed jauhar.

In 1567 Emperor Akbar attacked Chittorgarh. Five years later Maharana Pratap came to rule Mewar – a king without a capital. He continued to defy Akbar, and in 1576, confronted the imperial armies at Haldighati.

The battle ended in a stalemate and Maharana Pratap and his followers withdrew to the hills of Mewar, from where they continued to attack the Mughals through guerilla warfare for the next 20 years. Maharana Pratap made his descendants vow that they would not sleep on beds, nor live in palaces, nor eat off metal utensils, until Chittorgarh had been regained.
