Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7 July 1981 in Ranchi, Bihar (which now joins Jharkhand), he originally belonged to the Rajput family of Uttarakhand. His father, Pan Singh, is a retired employee of MECON (a public sector undertaking under the Steel Ministry), he has also served in junior management positions. His mother Devaki Devi is a housewife.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has an elder brother Narendra Singh Dhoni who is a politician and an elder sister Jayanthi Gupta is an English teacher.

He did his studies from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir School located at Shyamali in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He was an athletic student but initially was more interested in badminton and football. He was also a good goalkeeper of his school football team.

It was a good occasion when his football coach sent him as the wicket-keeper of the local club’s cricket team. Mahendra Singh Dhoni attracted everyone with his best performance and from 1995 to 1998 took a permanent position as a regular wicketkeeper in the Commando Cricket Club team.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued to perform from the very beginning and during 1997-98 he was selected for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship Team. He started taking cricket seriously only after 10th standard.

But for cricket, this legendary cricketer had to compromise his studies, so he left his studies after 12th.

In 1998, He was playing only at school and club level cricket, since he got selected to play in the Central Coal Fields Limited team. During the match, he impressed the former President of Bihar Cricket Association Deval Sahay with his true determination, hard work, and his best performance. After which he was given opportunities to play in first class cricket.

During the 1998–99 season, he failed to make it to the East Zone U-19 team or the rest of the Indian team, but next season he got selected for the East Zone U-19 team for the CK Nayudu Trophy.

Unfortunately, this time Dhoni’s team did not perform well, as a result, their team came down to the lowest level.

MS Dhoni Ranji Career

Dhoni had the opportunity to play in the Ranji Trophy during the 1999–2000 season. This Ranji Trophy match was played against the Assam Cricket team from Bihar. In the second innings of this match, Dhoni scored an unbeaten 68 runs.

He played a match against Bengal in the next season in which he hit a century but still his team lost this match. In this trophy season, he scored 283 runs in 5 matches. After this trophy, Dhoni played other and home matches as well.

Despite Dhoni’s best performance, he was not selected by the East Zone selectors, due to which Dhoni stayed away from the game and decided to take up the job.

At the age of 20, he got a job as a Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Kharagpur railway station through sports quota and moved to Midnapore in West Bengal.

He worked as a railway employee from 2001 to 2003. Because Dhoni’s mind was in sports since childhood, he could not work for long.

MS Dhoni Deodhar Trophy

During the year 2002–03, Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued to perform well in the Ranji Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy, which earned him recognition in the field of cricket. While playing in the match of Talent Resource Development Wing in Jamshedpur in 2003, Dhoni was seen by former captain Prakash Poddar after which he gave information about Dhoni’s game to National Cricket Academy and thus Dhoni’s selection in Bihar U-19 had been in the team.

On behalf of the East Zone team, he also participated in the Deodhar Trophy tournament in the 2003–2004 season. During this time Dhoni won the match and won the Deodhar Trophy.

He scored another century in this match. This season, Dhoni played a total of 4 matches in which he scored 244 runs.

During the year 2003–04, he got selected for the ‘India A-Team’ touring Zimbabwe and Kenya. For India A-Team, Dhoni played the first match against Zimbabwe XI as a wicket-keeper and made 7 catches and stumping during the match.

Dhoni also helped his team to beat Pakistan back to back. In which Dhoni scored a half-century. In this way, he did his best in the match played with three countries in which his talent was also noticed by the captain of the Indian national team, Sourav Ganguly.

MS Dhoni Duleep Trophy

In 2001, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was selected to play the Duleep Trophy for the Eastern Region. But the Bihar Cricket Association could not give this information to Dhoni on time as he was in Midnapore, West Bengal at that time.

Dhoni came to know about this trophy when his team had already reached Agartala, this match was to be played in Agartala itself. Although a friend of Mahendra Singh Dhoni arranged for a car to catch a flight from Kolkata Airport, but the car broke down in half. After this, Deepdas Gupta played the match by becoming the wicket-keeper.

 

MS Dhoni One Day Career

Dhoni was selected in the National One Day Match in the year 2004-2005 after impressing with his consistent performance. He played his first ODI against Bangladesh team. But he could not perform well in his first match and was just out on zero.

But despite the poor performance, his luck supported him because the selectors trusted him by selecting him for the next One Day Match series to be played with Pakistan.

This time Dhoni did not let down with his aggressive batting and in this match, he gave a great performance against Pakistan with full vigor and passion. With this, he became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score 148 runs in this match.

Dhoni did not get enough chances to bat in the first two matches of the India-Sri Lanka bilateral series, he got a chance to bat in the third match of this series. And he used this opportunity very well and performed brilliantly. Dhoni scored an unbeaten 183 from 145 balls keeping 299 goals in this match. With this, he broke all the records of this series and for his vigorous performance, he was also made Man of the Series.

In the India-Pakistan ODI series in 2005-06, MS Dhoni scored 68 runs in 4–5 matches of the series, 72 runs (not out), 2 runs (not out) for 77 runs (not out) and he helped the team to win the series by 4–1.

With his outstanding performance, Dhoni reached the top of the ICC ODI rankings on April 20, 2006, dethroning Ricky Ponting.

In the two series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka prior to the 2007 Cricket World Cup tournament, Dhoni showed superb performances with an average of 100 overs. However, Dhoni failed to perform well during the World Cup and the Indian team could not participate in the tournament.

In 2007, Dhoni was made the vice-captain for the two series against South Africa and England. He also led the Indian team to the ICC World Twenty20 Trophy in South Africa and won the trophy by defeating the Pakistani team.

After his successful captaincy in 20–20, MS Dhoni was given the responsibility of leading the Indian team in the One day Series against Australia in September 2007. Dhoni later led India to a World Cup win in 2011 for which he also received appreciation from his teammates Master Blaster and legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, including many cricket veterans.

During the 2009 match, Indian cricketer MS Dhoni scored 1198 runs in 24 innings and Ricky Ponting’s score was the same in 30 innings. Along with this, he also topped the ICC ODI batsman rankings for several months in 2009.

Dhoni led India’s victory in the 2011 World Cup. In the last match against Sri Lanka, he promoted himself in the batting order and played a match with 91 not out.

In 2013, Dhoni led India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy and also became the only captain to win the ICC Trophy, Test Match, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy.

MS Dhoni Test Match Career

Dhoni got selected as the wicket-keeper in the Indian Test team during the 2005 series against Sri Lanka. He scored 30 runs in his first Test match, but due to rain, this match had to be stopped midway.  Dhoni made his first half-century in the following match, which helped India win by a big score.

Playing against Pakistan in early 2006, Dhoni achieved his first Test century in an aggressive innings that helped India avoid follow-ons. He gave his best performance in the upcoming next three matches, one of which was played against Pakistan and two against England.

Dhoni led the team as Vice Captain during the series played against Australia in 2008 and he got appointed as the captain during the fourth match of this series. Prior to that, captain Anil Kumble was badly injured in the last match and announced his retirement.

Dhoni, in the series played against Sri Lanka in 2009, scored two centuries and Indian team won the series. At the same time, under his illustrious captaincy, the Indian team became the No.1 team in the ICC Test rankings in December 2009.

In 2014, in his career of cricket, he played the last Test match against Australia team, in this Test match, he scored 35 runs. After the match was over, Dhoni retired from the Test match although he continued to play One Day matches in the following years but in January 2017, Dhoni also retired from ODI captaincy.

 

MS Dhoni IPL Career

In the first season of IPL, Chennai Super Kings team bought Dhoni for $ 5 million i.e. 10 crores and he was also the most expensive player during this time. Under his captaincy, Chennai Super Kings had won two seasons of this league. Apart from this, he also supported his team in winning the 20-20 Champions League in the year 2010.

Chennai Super Kings team was banned for almost 2 years due to some reasons, after which the second team of IPL, Rising Pune Supergiant, offered him about US $ 1.9 million i.e about 12 crore rupees. After which Dhoni played the match for this team.

The ban on Chennai Super Kings was over in the year 2018 and this season again Dhoni was included in his team in Chennai Super Kings, after which Dhoni-led this team.

MS Dhoni T20 Career

Mahendra Singh Dhoni played his first T20 match against South Africa but his performance in his first T20 match was very disappointing. In this match, Dhoni faced only 2 balls and scored only zero although Team India won the match.

  • Cricketer Rahul Dravid was handling the responsibility of the Indian team before MS Dhoni was made the captain. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar had a big hand in making Dhoni the captain. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar talked to the BCCI to get Dhoni captained by the Indian team, after which the BCCI made Dhoni the captain of the Indian team in the year 2007.
  • After becoming the captain of India, he led the Indian team to the ICC World T20 held in South Africa in September 2007 and helped to win the tournament.
  • After winning the World T20 Cup, Dhoni was also given the captaincy for the One Day Match and Test Match and Dhoni carried out his responsibility with true honesty.
  • Under the captaincy of Dhoni, Team India achieved the first position in the ICC Test rankings in the year 2009. Along with this, as the batsman Dhoni also made many records while being the captain.
  • Dhoni has led India in two World Cups and under his captaincy, Team India also won the World Cup in 2011. Whereas in the World Cup held in 2015, India had also achieved the semi-finals.

  • MS Dhoni has received 6 Man of the Series awards and 20 Man of the Match awards for his outstanding performance in One Day matches. He has received 2 Man of the Match awards in Tests throughout his career.
  • In 2007, Dhoni was also honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award by the Government of India. This award is the best honor given in the world of sports.
  • Dhoni has been named ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He also made it to the ICC World ODI XI team for 7 consecutive years from 2008 to 2014. Dhoni was also included in the ICC World Test XI team in the years 2009, 2010 and 2013.
  • In 2011, Dhoni was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree by De Montfort University.
  • Dhoni was also awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor in the year 2009. Along with this, Dhoni was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the country on 2 April 2018.

In 2008, Dhoni was staying in a hotel with his team and there he met Sakshi. Actually Sakshi Rawat was then working as an intern at the same hotel. Sakshi did her graduation in Hotel Management from Aurangabad. After that, both of them started dating each other.

Coincidentally, the two had known each other since their childhood as their father was an associate at Mequon and they both attended the same school. On the other hand, if we talk about the age difference between the two, then Sakshi is almost 7 years younger than Dhoni.
Both Dhoni and Sakshi have been dating each other for almost 2 years after which they decided to get married and on July 4, 2010, they got married. After this, Sakshi gave birth to a baby girl named Ziva Dhoni on 6 February 2015.
